Why I transitioned into Technical Writing

Why I transitioned into Technical Writing

Introduction

I have listened to several tech speakers talk and give advice, and one thing I would say has stuck with me after listening to numerous talks is that while choosing a field in tech, apart from the financial goals, always pick a field that matches your personality or moves with your passion. It becomes naturally easier for you to progress in that field and not easily give up when it gets difficult. That is the case of Technical Writing for me. It was a very easy decision for me to branch into Technical Writing because I believe it is a part of me, as I naturally possess the skills and qualities that would make a great writer. Here are some of the reasons why I am branching into Technical Writing.

To Boost My Tech Career

I currently work in the Technology field with expertise ranging from Technical Support, UX Design and Web Development and there has always been a need for me to write proposals, reports and case studies on projects. Lately, I have also been exploring the UX writing aspect, in a recent project worked on, I took up the role of writing the content for the designed pages and I wrote most of the content from my head. I then realised it was a bit difficult for the designer and some people to come up with content without researching or copying, It then dawned on me that I had a thing for writing.

Learning Technical Writing would give me the opportunity of learning another tech field and boost my tech career because I would then have added another expertise to my stack of knowledge.

To Increase my Job Opportunities

One thing I have realised about the tech industry is, you get ahead of your peers when you have a strong skillset, so the more skills you possess, the more marketable you are. Employers are looking for employees that can do this and that, sort of a jack-of-all-trade person, so it is only wise to keep learning new skills to increase my employability.

The need for experts who can convert technical information into understandable literature is driving the growth of the technical writing industry. Companies reward technical writers who can bridge the gap between technical experts and end users as a result of the growing complexity of technology and the requirement for documentation. This need may bring stability and chances for professional advancement.

Therefore it is only wise for me to jump on the bandwagon to have a wider range of job opportunities.

To be better positioned for remote work and freelancing

I am currently in school and getting a full-time job has been quite hard, but technical writing can be flexible in terms of working hours, I can get a contract or one-off writing gig easily to earn money in my own free time, without involving so much meetings and deadlines as opposed to other tech roles.

When it comes to working conditions, technical writing can be flexible. Technical writers frequently work remotely and this would help me combine this field with my other career path and also maintain a better work-life balance.

Natural Writing Skills

Right from my secondary days of writing basic essays and letters, I had always stood out, especially in my creativity and ability to think on the spot and come up with a good enough write-up. Also while in the University, I helped several of my colleagues in their thesis writeup and even till now I write personal Statements and motivation letters for applicants and research projects for students. I also come up with well-fabricated write-ups for any purpose.

So, I believe it is only natural for me to harness this skill and get professional at it

Conclusion

With me identifying as someone with excellent writing abilities, a love of technology, and a desire for better career opportunities and challenges, switching to technical writing seems like would be a fruitful career choice. Technical writers are in high demand as a result of the field's employment options, stability, and flexibility.

The advantages of entering this industry would be significant, even though the transition would necessitate picking up specialized writing abilities. I am ready to dive into the challenge to create a better future for myself.
